  • Notes
    • Left Rosenberg, Russia 19 October 1907. Imigrated to the USA from Libau, Russia (now Liepaja, Latvia). Connection was made at Liverpool, England UK where he and his family were listed on the Ships Manifest of the SS Baltic. On November 14, 1907, the SS Baltic was to leave for Ellis Island, New York and arrive there November 23, 1907, but for some unknown reason, he and his family were scratched off the manifest with the notation by the ships Captain that they did not sail (copy of the manifest in the Documentation section of this book). He and his family then made the trip to the USA on the SS Cymric that arrived in Boston, Massachusetts November 20, 1907. Passport Number 9987. The passenger manifest of the SS Baltic indicates that his brother Heinrich paid for his family's passage, and Peter had $15.00 cash (this may have caused the cancellation as each family member was to have $5.00) in his possession. He was listed as 5' 3" in height, complexion fair, brown hair and eyes. His wife Katherine Anna listed as 5' 2" in height, complexion fair, brown hair and eyes. Destination was listed as Colorado. Passenger manifest of the S. S. Cymric from Liverpool, England which arrived at Boston, Massachusetts November 20, 1907 lists the family as follows: Passenger 18; Peter Herdt, age 30; occupation Farmer; last permanent address: Rosenberg, Russia; name and address of nearest relative in Russia: Friedrich Herdt, Rosenberg, Russia; destination: Sugar City, Colorado. Wife: Anna 26. Children: Anne, 2; Kina, 2; maria, 2 months.

From Boston the family traveled to Sugar City, Otero County, Colorado to join his brother Heinrich and his family. Moved to Haig, Scottsbluff County, Nebraska in 1912 where he farmed. Moved to McGrew, Scottsbluff County, Nebraska in 1914 where he farmed with his brother Heinrich. Moved to Scottsbluff, Scottsbluff County, Nebraska in 1917 where he worked on a dairy farm. Moved to Mitchell, Scottsbluff County, Nebraska in 1925 where he farmed until 1929. He moved to La Grange and Hawk Springs, Goshen County, Wyoming and farmed until 1935. He then moved to Torrington, Goshen County Wyoming in 1936 to join his brothers Heinrich and David in farming. He retired in 1940.

His first wife, Katherine Anna Herdt, was a cousin. They were married by Pastor Gotthold Eduard Hahn who served as Pastor from 1892 to 1906 (from Joseph Schnurr's book "The Churches and the Religious life of the German Russian") of the Rosenberg Lutheran Church.

He was a school teacher in Rosenberg, Russia. He also served in the Russian Army for two years. In the United States he worked as a farm laborer, dairy worker, and a farmer.

The Colorado 1910 United States Cenus listed his name as Peter "Hard", in precinct two, Otero County, Colorado. Peter, age 33, Anna, age 28, were shown as being married 8 years. Each with the occupation of farm laborer. They are shown as having had 4 children, and all four still living. Children were: Anna age 6, Kanna age 4, Marie age 3 (all born in Russia), Eva age 6 months, and born in Colorado. Census takers had the tendency to write down what they thought they heard, and with language difficulties errors occurred.

The Nebraska Scottsbluff County 1920 US Census for Mitchell Precinct, District 224 listed Peter and his family as follows: "Peter Herdt, age 43, born in Russia, entered the USA in 1910; Wife Louize H., age 43, born in Russia, entered the USA in 1910; Children: Gimine (Agnes), age 15, born in Russia; Mary, age 12, born in Russia; Eva, age 9, born in Nebraska; Mike, age 7, born in Nebraska; Plane (Pauline), age 5, born in Nebraska; Lidde C. Step-Children: Manuel, age 15, born in Russia; Tillie, age 13, born in Russia; Samel (Samuel), age 9, born in Russia; Lillie, age 7, born in Colorado; Helen, age 5, born in Colorado". Date of census was January 21, 1920. Taken from the Internet, Ancestory.com.

The Wyoming 1930 US Census for Goshen County, La Grange Precinct, District 22 listed the family as follows: Family Group 146; Peter Hertt, age 53, born in Russia, entered the USA 1907. Occupation: General Farming; Wife Lizzie, age 53, born in Russia, entered the USA 1906; Children: Mike, age 18, born in Nebraska. Became a naturalized citizen November 16, 1938 at Torrington, Goshen County, Wyoming.

I can recall that he was a great fisherman. My father, my brother Don, and I would pick him up at his home in Torrington, Wyoming and take him with us when we fished in the North Platte River, or any of the local lakes. I remember one occasion when my brother Don hooked Grandfather Peter's ear when he was casting his cane pole line. He was bleeding from the wound but wanted to keep on fishing because they were biting so well.

Buried at the Valley View Cemetery, Torrington, Goshen County, Wyoming. Location: M3 SW4 L5 B54, S17.
