  • Notes
    • Spent two years in an orthopedic hospital at Lincoln, Nebraska as a result of a fall from a tree in 1918. Worked for the C.C.Camp located at Thermopolis, Wyoming as a young man. He was working on the Henry Parkhurst farm north of Scottsbluff when he got married. John and Pauline (his sister) Margheim gave a wedding party for the couple at their farm north of Scottsbluff when he married. I can recall that it was a traditional German wedding party that my parents set up in the beet shack on their farm. It began friday nite and lasted until sunday afternoon. There was music for dancing, and plenty of beer, whiskey, and German foods. From his obituary in the Star-Herald Newspaper June 5, 2001: "He was employed by Great Western Sugar in Gering and the Gering Public Schools, and retired a second time at age eighty from being a groundskeeper for Vernon Schick's Park Motel. He was a long time member of the church, and made a profession of faith as a young man. He was an excellent gardener and it showed by his meticulous care and harvest. He never demanded anything and was content with what he had. He ran the race of life with endurance and also showed us how to die with dignity. He will be long remembered by his compassionate heart, helping hand, big, big, smile, and his love for children and grandchildren".

From the book "Pastors in the Parish of Beidek/Schilling" by Joseph Schnurr, Pastor Gotthold Eduard Hahn, born June 6, 1863 in Katzbach, Bessarabia, Russia, ordained November 7, 1890 in Beidek, was the Lutheran Pastor of Rosenberg, Saratov Province, Russia from 1892 thru 1906. It appears that Mike's father and mother named him after Pastor Gotthold Eduard Hahn, as they were married by him in 1902.

The Nebraska 1920 US census for Lancaster county, city of Lincoln, fifth precinct, listed him as a patient of Orthopedic Hospital. Listed as follows: Gottholdt Herdt, age 6, born in Nebraska. Date of cenus was January 12, 1920.
