  • Notes
    • The book "Moorefield" Fairfax County, Virginia by Thomas V. DiBacco indicated that his father, Jeremiah Moore, co-owned "Moorefield" with his brother Thomas. They inherited the property from Nancy P. Moore in 1852. The book states: "1874 Deed from Jeremiah Moore and Thomas Moore to Hannah M, and James Hunter. Fairfax County Land Records, Deed Book, Liber R, No. 4 (October 1, 1874), page 277.

The Virginia 1870 US Census for Fairfax County, Providence Township, Fairfax Court House Post Office listed his name as E. (Edward, named after his Maternal Grandmother Mary Ann Blackburn Moore's father Edward Lewis Blackburn) Lindsay Moore, age 5; born in Virginia. (His son Thomas John Moore indicated to me, Clarence Jake Margheim, before he died that his father had changed his name to Thomas because he had not liked the name, Edward. He adopted the name of his uncle Thomas with whom he lived after his parents died. Thomas Moore and his son Robert Walton, were attorneys and helped him with the name change).

The Virginia 1880 US Census for Fairfax County, Providence Township, Fairfax Court House Village, listed him as living with his paternal uncle Thomas Moore. His name had been changed to Thomas Lindsay Moore, age 15. Evidently his mother and father had died before the 1880 census as no record has been found in that census of either one of them. He lived with the family until his paternal uncle Thomas Moore died about 1889. He then joined his older brother Francis Frank Moore and left Virginia for the state of Texas.

The Texas 1900 US Census for Bexar County, San Antonio Township, Ward 6, Precinct 15, Enumeration District 103 lists the family as follows: Family Group 89; Thomas L. Moore, age 34, born in Virginia. Occupation: Watchman. Wife: Ada, age 25, born in Texas. Children: Gertrude, age 4, born in Texas; Lela, age 2, born in Texas. Listed by census taker as living on East Commerce Street.

Was injured and crippled in a railroad accident in the early 1900's. He started his own Repair Shop Business in San Antonio. He developed a hand held Railroad Lantern that became popular with railroad men and was used by them throughout the USA, Canada and Mexico. He opened up his own Lantern manufacturing plant in conjunction with his Repair Shop Business in about 1901. He maintained the business until his death.

The Texas 1910 US Census for Bexar County, San Antonio Township, Ward 6, Enumeration District 43 lists the family as follows: Family Group 79; Thomas L. Moore, age 48, born in Texas. Occupation: Manufacturing, Lanterns. Wife: Ada, age 44, born in Texas, married 15 years, 4 children born, 4 children living. Children: Gertrude, age 14, born in Texas; Leila, age 12, born in Texas; Thomas, Jr., age 2, born in Texas; Ethel, age 2/12, born in Texas.

He always indicated to his family that he was from Strawberry Vale Manor, Virginia. The World Family Tree, Volume 14, tree #3272, indicates that the family lived at Vienna, Fairfax County, Virginia. Strawberry Vale Manor was located in the rural area near Vienna.

The book "Maplewood", Fairfax County, Virginia by Diane N. Rafuse: "After Priscilla Gantt (widow of John Gantt, Jr.) died, the property (Strawberry Vale) was bought (in 1874) by Jeremiah Moore, a grandson of the Jeremiah Moore who was a well-known preacher in this area. Jeremiah Moore's family owned the house until the late 1870's, when it was sold to M. C. Snook. Members of the Snook family owned Strawberry Vale Manor until 1950".
