  • Notes
    • After the death of her husband Heinrich in 1937, Elizabeth and her family remained in the Merkel Family Home. On September 14, 1941 the Communists, on orders of Joseph Stalin, came into Merkel in the middle of the night and informed all of it's inhabitants that they were being relocated and had to pack up and leave that day. They were considered enemies of the State by Joseph Stalin because of their German ancestry. They were loaded into railroad cars for the trip to an unknown destination. She and her family eventually ended up in Omsk, Siberia, Russia after spending 22 days in a railroad car with little food and water.
