  • Notes
    • The original settlers list that was published for Catherine the Great in 1767 for the village of Dietel (Oleshna), Samara, Province indicates that Johannes Foos (spelled Fasz) came from the Hesse area in West Germany (subsequent research by Dr. Igor Pleve, Saratov State University, Russia and Dr. Dona B. Reeves-Marquardt, Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas has indicated that Johannes came from Heimkirchen, Pfalz, Germany). Dr. Igor Pleve, Saratov State University, Saratov Russia was retained by Dr. Dona Reeves-Marquardt, Austin, Texas and Clarence Jake Margheim, Norwalk, California to do a genealogy chart of the Foos family in Merkel (Makarovka), Saratov Province, Russia. As part of that report, completed in August 2002, Dr. Pleve included the Foos family in Dietel. (Note: Dr. Pleve had already produced a Foos genealogy chart in 1999 for the village of Dietel). Subsequent family information was taken from the "Foos, Born in Russia" book published in 1996 by Lee D. Foos, 2816 Stafford, Wichita, Kansas, and the " World Family Tree" by Broderbund Corporation. Written and verbal information also obtained from Foos, and Margheim Family members Argentina, Germany and the USA.

The 1767 Original Settlers list for the village of Dietel contained the following information (translation courtesy of Darrell Kautz AHSGR Merkel Village Coordinator) on the family:
"Anna Margaretha Foos, 9, Lutheran orphan of Jacob Foos, living in the household (19) of Wendel Brauchbacher, 40, Lutheran miller from Oslong?, Kurpfalz, and his wife Margaretha, 32. Johannes Foos, 18, Lutheran farmer from Heimkirchen, Hesse? Wife: Apollonia, 21. Brother Johann Adam, 4. Sisters: Anna Elisabeth, 16, Christina, 14. Arrived in the colony 1 July 1767. Received from the custody office in Saratov, 30 Rubels, 2 horses, 1 cow, 1 wagen axle, 2 axes, 1 pitchfork handle, 1 leather strap for towing, 1Krummholz (crooked timber, knee-timber?), 25 sachen hemp rope, 1 strap bridle, 1 ax, 1 iron plow, 1 chisel, 1 zugmesser? (literally: pulling knife?), 1 drill, 1 pot fork, 300 large nails, 1 scythe, 2 clamps".

In the 1768 Russian census for the village of Dietel Johannes Foos listed in his inventory: "2 horses, 1 cow, 2 desyatinas plowed".

MEANING AND SPELLING OF THE FOOS NAME: Lee D. Foos writes in his book "Foos, Born in Russia" that Foos means "Foot" in German. The Family name is spelled in many different ways due to errors on immigration records, ships lists, county court records, etc. Even members of the same family spelled the name different ways. Common spellings are: Foos, Foose, Fose, Foss, Fuss, Voos, and Fasz.

Godparents at the Baptism of Johannes Foos were: Johann Schneider, Johannes Stetzenbach, Anna Elisabetha Metz, and Maria Eva Foos. They provided the child with the name Johannes.
