When Jacob's parents moved to into Findlay, Ohio he studied law under Edison Goit, and was admitted to the bar in 1837. In October 1838 he was appointed Prosecuting Attorney, where he served one term. He then served two terms (1838-1834) as County Recorder. He had been raised a Catholic, but became a Methodist Circuit Rider on week ends. He died at age 32 in Perry County, Ohio from "Milk Fever".
